HOW’S YOUR FITNESS?

I wonder how many of us made a resolution this year to stay fit and healthy?strength

From buying one of the new ‘health’ blender to signing up to our local gyms, the start of the new year can bring many personal promises. For some us this ‘new me’ only lasts a few days let alone weeks, and for others we surprise ourselves and make it as far as the fridge door. I for one, was the latter, guilty as charged. There’s always next year!

I currently keep ‘fit’ through my local rugby club, training twice a week with matches at the weekend. I love the game, the big hits, the tactics and the team unity. I am surrounded by people who are healthier, fitter and better than me and the more I observe my environment the more I have come to realise, that it goes beyond the smell of the changing rooms. Our society has become obsessed with fitness, image and health. UK gym membership soared by 44% last year (Guardian 2015, https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2015/aug/18/uk-gym-membership-spending-up-by-44-per-cent)  and men are increasingly joining in the fitness and image brigade with women. Don’t get me wrong, we need to keep fit and healthy. But what are the motives behind it? Is it for the looks we receive or is it so that we are in good shape to carry out God’s plan for our life? Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, for he is what I want we should look like, not Christiano Ronaldo; they’re both World Class though.

In 1 Timothy 4:7-8 we are reminded by Paul to spend our time and energy in training ourselves for spiritual fitness. Physical exercise has some value, but spiritual exercise is much more important.

Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.

If you’re honest, how often do you work on your spiritual fitness? Do you need to spend less time in front of the mirror and more time with your heavenly father? Less time lifting weights and more time lifting your eyes to him. I do.

The race of life is bigger than any city marathon, a challenge for us all.

HOPE. A NEW DIMENSIONthe-best-is-yet-to-come

Hope is defined as a verb: it is to expect with confidence, to desire the obtainment of something. Some of the words that echo the same as the word Hope are trust, expectation, longing, dream, optimism, and desire.

God has called us to be people of hope, to be made in HIS image. God knows us better than we know ourselves, He knows our weaknesses, our struggles, our failures and despite this He still loves us, believes in us and blesses us. He is a God of Hope! An acronym I once read of the word hope described it as Have Only Positive Expectations. Our God is a Father that only has positive thoughts and expectations for us today. When you start to realise the love and unending hope he has for you it will fill you with joy and peace like never before.

This week I encourage you to press into God and ask Him to reveal the vastness of His love for you, the hope that He has for you and the plans He has for you. I can guarantee you won’t be disappointed as they are only plans of goodness and of love!
